Shades & Shadows
Shades & Shadows are the Yin-Yang of life …
– Nihar Pradhan
Photography is a visual art form, but one should have a sense for it…particularly so, as the form suggest must have an eye for it. I took this statement lightly, not to undermine the role of light in photography, till I faced this colourful display of lamp stand. I knew that light and darkness are two important facets of photography…I was walking past the extended series of small customized shops in the corridor of a grandiose mall.
I did walk past the light shop, but I had a sneak peek of the displayed ‘shades & shadows’ in the lamp stand…it was my obsessive sense of spotting artful composition in the scattered surrounding forced me to retreat back.
Once I did, paused and observed the lamps & it’s bases on show…the wonderful blend of myriad patterns, musical instruments, the geometrical shapes and the colourful combinations swiftly unfolded like a musical blockbuster movie scene.
Though I couldn’t hear the music emitting from the players playing the trumpets to guitars to drums…but I felt and visualized the musicians and the performers through the eye for myriad size and shapes of displayed lamps.
It was the ‘spotlight of light’ that projected the dance protagonist and the musical instrument players, but it was the ‘focus of darkness’ in the background and the foreground, with embossed patterns & colours that amplified the illuminated scenes on display…there is a story in every walk of our life where we dance to the tunes of musical ‘shades & shadows’.
Yes, the subject matters as does the setting in ‘Photography’ as is the case in ‘Writing’ where the context matter as does the content.
