Pigeons & Photography
Birds in swing bring the wings in action and the lift to fly…
– Nihar Pradhan
Pigeon photography, yes it is a focused stream of bird’s photography. It was perhaps the usual casual encounter of the photographer with the birds…but it has evolved and the beautiful birds have captured the imagination of the man behind the camera. Why not, pigeons are considered amongst the most intelligent birds on earth. Where there is convergence of beauty and intelligence, passion and perfection emerges and engulfs everybody around the convergence.
It was my accidental but a serious attempt at pigeon photography. I was onto my walk into the KBR National park in the heart of the cyber city, it was early evening and it was Sunday. I was not prepared, I didn’t anticipate. I didn’t have the best tool and latest technology at hand to capture the sudden unfolding of the scene of flocking & flying pigeons. It was my mobile camera which instantly came to my rescue…I just couldn’t have missed the loft and the lift of the pigeons playing with the feeding onlookers.
It was a common ground where both the walkers and the birds were in engagement, the exchange and the expression were flying…the scene was dynamically changing, few of the birds were taking off, and few of the birds still on the ground and the rest were landing. It was an array of on the wing moments unfolding to be enveloped into the image sensors, and unlike me there were few professional photographers well prepared and equipped with the best tool ready to click and create the magic…
I was told to get the best shot I have to put the camera on the tripod and set the shutter speed more than 1000, this will enable to freeze the flying images of flocking pigeons. The fast shutter speed requires more light, hence the f-stop to be set at the lower end. I was dearth of time and the magical moments to get the best shot of the flying pigeons were flying…I did what could be best done at that moment by an amateur photographer like me.
