Art & Craft of Writing – Is it an art or a craft?
Writing is not easy neither writing is difficult…then how do we classify writing.
It’s a paradox.
As we read more, we start reading the different writing forms better. Deciphering the forms of writing are always fascinating to discover. The journey of self-discovery as a writer. In the journey of reading and writing we keep releasing our verdicts. Like a judge we improve our judgment with more cases. The writing theme was good but the language was bad. The questioning was good but the illustration in writing could have been better. The structure was compact but the writing style was not conducive to the chosen topic.
We speak of the language which builds our writing. Writing is a display of our etymological skill.
The language matters. The words counts.
The grammatical syntax governs, the sentences formulates the structure, and the power of vocabulary gives voice to the personality of our writing. The craft of writing is about the language we use and vocabulary we hold. Language is the vehicle which drives our writing. Then the question arises, what is the fuel which powers the engine of writing, yes, it has to be our thoughts. Is it that one can write better in one’s mother tongue or any language of one’s interest can do it better?
When we speak of writing personality, style matters.
What is our writing style?
Is it formal or semi-formal? Is it technical or non-technical? Is it journalistic or non-journalistic? Is it simple or complex? Is it smooth or rough? We can learn or adopt a style of writing, and this is based on our level of interest in reading and degree of inclination for learning. It is a fact that our reading has a biased influence on our writing, if we are a vociferous reader of classics, our writing will have a tinge of literary traits. If we are a regular reader of newspaper and magazines, it will reflect the journalistic style of writing. Nothing is flawed in any style, but it is important to know the style that best suites our writing.
Writing is an art to present but there is a science to produce the piece of writing.
As a writer we should have the ability to read the reader’s mind. Mind reading is a science. As a writer we should have the ability to question the assumptions possessed by the reader. As a writer we should be able to reflect on what we write and learn from the reflection. As a writer we should have the ability to illustrate our points. As a writer we should be able to use the metaphors to enrich our communication in writing. Being both “artistic and scientific” adds to the decoration and coronation of writing.
Writing is about idea management.
Anything done or discussed without an idea is cosmetic and transient. Writing is no exception. Writing without an idea is a body without a soul. Just writing without having an idea to dwell and develop a story becomes a meaningless engagement with readers. The writing engagement has to be purposeful. The power of idea has to reflect in the power of writing. Writing is not only about demonstrating the hold on one’s language but depicting the power of an idea. Definitely, the prudent use of language makes the writing more profound.
Writing is also about the choice of theme, we write.
Writing on travel. Writing on cuisines. Writing on literature. Writing is also on the preference of genres we write. Writing on mystery. Writing on romance. Writing on humor. The choice of theme or preference of genre reflects our personality. Writing on science to writing on arts, these are not easy proposition and everybody cannot write with ease. But at the same time writing is not difficult either if writing and reading are our areas of interest or we are able to develop it as our passion.
Writer is a philosopher. Writer is also a psychologist.
The philosophy of writing to studying the psychology of a reader, why to write and for whom to write…these are the questions which are constantly searching for the right answers. Writing cannot be without a purpose, it loses its essence. And it shouldn’t be. Writing should make a difference to our life and living.
Writing should be for a cause.
Writing has the power to change the society, and why not, the written thoughts need to be used for more productive and more purposeful human existence.
As a writer we should have repository of ideas on which to write and should have meaningful purpose in writing what we write. The “art and craft of writing” lies in making both the idea and the purpose in perfect sync.
And the symphony that emerges should be there in the flow of our thoughts and structure of our writing, in which the reader can hear the musical tone and sing the song to one’s own tune…crafting the art of writing.
