Alphabet, Number, Currency – The Building Blocks of Communication
Alphabets are the building block of human communication.
Alphabet is a set of letters or symbols that represents the phonemes (speech sound) of any language used in any form of communication. These alphabets are arranged in a particular order. Hence we call it alphabetic. A single letter represents a single sound. The English word “alphabet” is a Greek origin comprises of “alpha” and “beta”, are the first two letters of Greek alphabets.
Primarily all letters had its root in the Semites, also from the Ancient Egypt hieroglyphs, these letters and symbols gradually moved from one civilization to another. And over a time it got developed into a set of script known as Phoenician alphabet. The Phoenicians were behind the spread of Phoenician alphabets. In fact it was first script to describe words phonemically, it was initially with limited consonants later got added with the vowels by Greek transforming it as the true alphabet.
Each letter in the alphabet has a story to tell. It is fascinating to connect with the correlation and each letter has a relationship to the way we have interpreted things and associated with nature. For instance “A”, the original meaning in ancient Semitic was ‘ox’ and if we turn it upside down we have the head of animal. Take the case of “H” has its derivation from the Egyptian hieroglyph of a fence. And the story of “I” was meaning arm and hand, and Greek adopted it and then it become the word we use it today. These intriguing stories are compassionately plucked from the garden of nature.
Once we known the letters, it is perhaps the start of the story, as then it is about the formation of sentences to the meaning behind these simple to complex sentences.
Language is a canvas.
Learning the art, the knack of how to use the language for the purpose of establishing an effective mode of communication. There has to some rules to govern these formation and communication. The grammar governing the rule of language, otherwise it would be chaos and confusion. What one is speaking and writing and what the other is reading, hearing and understanding. It is wildly left to the realm of each interpretation. There is this way of correct spelling and there is also the way of correct writing.
There is a science behind the language.
Orthography is the study of correct spelling.
Graphology is the study of correct writing.
And the way we pronounce those words and there is that variation of pronunciation based on regional undertone to social upbringing. The accent matters. The way an American or British speak to the way a Japanese or Indian speaks the word differ in its pitch. Hence pronunciation within a nation or region is not a problem; the problem arises when we immigrate to new country or a different place. It needs an adoption to a new composition. Is that dressing anyway changes the fundamental meaning of the word or it is the pronunciation that remains sacrosanct. There is always that intrinsic conflict between the way we pronounce and the way we spell, and especially in the language of English.
The question of why “cat” is not “kat”, and why “can” is not “kan”, and why in “psychology” ‘p’ is silent, and how should we pronounce “our” and “hour”, these two words are Homophones i.e. same pronunciation but different meaning…There is again the question of American spelling and the British spelling, center and centre have the same meaning but American have it spelled center, and British prefer centre. Take the word “schedule as it is spelled and pronounced, American pronounce “sked-jule” and British pronounce “shed-jool”.
Another aspect of language is the diverse forms and the diversity of usage i.e. dialect with accent. Dialect is a variation to different set of language. Accent is the voice given to the language. The sound is what makes the word transported. And we all know about various transmission losses in everything that gets transported through a medium. Communication is no exception and it has what we call the communication gap. Sound needs a medium as it cannot travel without the support of a medium. Everything that goes from one place to another and the way it goes has a cost and a loss.
How do we maximize our communication with minimum cost and loss?
The way the word changes meaning with change of wording in the words, the present tense to past tense…the elements of grammar. Is fat the past tense of fit. It is morphology besides the phonology of the language that makes up the composition of communication. Not all languages are phonetic. In phonetic language there is a direct correlation between spelling and the sound. Interestingly, English is not a phonetic language as we don’t say the word the way it is spelled.
Spanish is the second most phonetic language after Chinese Mandarin.
There are words that mirror the spelling and speech. And when the word we spell it the way it sounds then in English it has a term “Onomatopoeia” to represent the words imitation of the sound.
Numbers are the building block of machine connection.
Number is a mathematical notation used to measure and count. The combination of 10 symbols of digits is called the Hindu-Arabic numbers. The Indian mathematicians played their significant part in developing this numbering system. The number had its origin from the Sumerian and Babylonian civilization moved into the ancient Egypt. Number and counting has its root some 4000-5000 years back in the Sumerian civilization. There is strong correlation between numbers and civilization, how the movement of civilization galvanized with the development of the number system.
As tribes and communities started producing more goods and wanted to keep tab needed the system to number it and count the pieces of goods produced, stored and sold. The record of what is produced and what is stored and what is shared. The question they confronted was that of sharing and exchanging beyond the barter system. It was the ingenious method of exchanging goods for goods and services for services, establishing standard terms of references.
This bartering and exchanging system had its limitation.
There was a need for a better swap and sustainable system that is fair and just. The invention of money and advent of currency changed the rules of doing business, the game of exchanging moved to a new field of operation. The formation of the system for doing business in a way that is comparative and competitive.
Egyptians were the first civilization representing different symbols for different numbers. Greece under the aegis of the mathematicians and philosopher Pythagoras definitely added to the system of numbers and counting. He introduced the concepts like odd and even numbers. And then the role of Archimedes another great Greek mathematicians added newer dimensions to the system of numbering.
Currency is the building block of business commutation.
Currency is a medium of exchange. It becomes the basis of trade between countries. It is the price of the currency that determines the health of a nation. Foreign exchange is the trading of different national currencies. Money seems is a magical invention and it is impossible to image a life without money. Our body needs food and business need money. Just as our body cannot survive without the circulation of blood from the food business cannot thrive without the rotation of money.
Kuwait has the highest currency value in the world.
China created the world first paper money.
British pound is the world oldest currency dating back to 8th century.
The value of a good is determined by the state of supply and demand of that good in the economy and price of a good is the money it takes to get that good. Money is a measure of value and the medium of exchange.
American dollar is the most traded currency in the world.
Venezuelan currency is the weakest currency in the world.
The basic arithmetic operations includes addition, subtraction, multiplication to division, and the advanced operations includes probabilities, percentages, exponentiation to differentiation. All these operations get crafted into the logic of algorithms bundled in the software. The magic we seen in the computer is an outcome of the computation of algorithms and in the end it is all converted to binary numbers of 0 and 1. Binary system is fundamental concept of computer science. It provides the connection between the hardware and the software.
The language that computers understand.
Fundamentally it boils down to the number game in the dazzle we seen in the digital world. Everything we do like talking on a mobile, sending an e-mail to automation of activities all are algorithms of logic bundle into equations of numbers. There are alphabets that play its part in designing a programming language that can communicate with the machines. It is the number that speaks with computer.
Alphabets are defined as finite set of symbols. There is standard code for information exchange. The coding is with the numbers, letters and the special symbols. It enables different computer to communicate with each other.
Language is vehicle of communication and what matters is the way we communicate and whether the people we speak to understand what we speak, rest other should get subservient to the very idea of understanding and not dissecting and labeling based on those regimented rules and frames of accent to confirmation to set rules.
Communication is the currency of creating a collaborative society. The communities across societies do engage with each other in fostering a better understanding. The countries while maintaining their sovereignty has to work together to build a better world. There is this world-wide web of computer network. These have broken the barriers and there are no physical boundaries between these digital devices. The computers to talk to each other, it needs to set up a healthy global network thereby sharing vital data and solving complex problems. The algorithms in the computer are a power house of solving multitude of global problems. And there is a language that the machine understands, and there is language that man communicates with the machine.
Everything intuitively revolves around the language of the people, the computers and the business. And these languages are languages of words, symbols and numbers.
Numbers help us to decipher the different patterns in nature. Each pattern has a story to tell. The stories of pattern and rhythms in nature are deeply fascinating. The more we explore the hidden den of nature and read those amazing stories written in the landscape of nature, the more closely we get connected with the heart of nature.
Ultimately what matter is how close we are to the heart of the matter?
The matter here is nature. And it is world that encompasses the essence of who we are and why we are here in this wonderful world.
Language and numbers are learned through a structured process and needs rigorous practice, unlike the way many other things that we inherit. And unless we invest time and effort we don’t build the repository and the response to new plane of communication. It is communication that build communities and it is the communities that come together to build the society.
The currency of communication in societies are the alphabets and the numbers.
It all again depends on how we exchange this currency and how the value of currency keeps going up and down depending on the factors of ease and reach of a language.
