How as WRITERS we give motion to our emotions?
Before I deal with emotions it is important to dwell on the motion. I am not referring to the topic in discussion (but what is motion?). And motion is nothing to do with psychology (mind & behaviour), it is pure physics (movement & balance) and emotions are everything to do with psychology. But the question remains; is there a connection with physics…the mechanics of feelings and sentiments.
Motion is the process of moving places or positions, the change.
The change is governed by many factors…the speed, the velocity and the acceleration. And it also depends on the mass and the force.
Why am I going into the basics of physics when I am to talk on the chemistry of psychology?
As a writer we give a “treatment to our subject in writing” based on the idea we conceptualize. And it cannot be coloured and coated with our current state of mind which has nothing to do with the story and the characters. We are to write a humorous story and we are in a state of anger…the dichotomy, how to deal.
How emotions influence our writing?
Precisely, the question…
Writing and emotions are so intrinsically intertwined that I just cannot separate it. Just like our writing, our emotions are no different, are equally subjected to the same factors of governance. How long it takes us to get angry, our temperament matters. How we use those anger, the direction we takes matters. Constructive use of anger can take us to higher echelons of life; otherwise we are putting ourselves on down hills of destruction. How quickly we get angry and there are these factors that accelerates that process of us getting annoyed. “Anger” as an emotion is just taken as a case in point and it could be same with all other emotions…depression to fear to love, every emotion goes through this journey.
There is this speed, there is a velocity and there is that acceleration in our emotions. And we have manage this momentum. Writing has to follow the flow of emotions. We cannot just park our emotions and start playing with our writing.
Hence, the bigger question how we can give right motion to our emotions.
The control is vital.
Then the question that needs to be answered is do we have the control on our emotions. The stimulation that affects our emotions is both external and internal. External…what others do with us, and Internal…what we set our expectations.
How can he be so mean to me? Why am I being victimized? I never get what I desire but we ignore the question do I deserve what I desire. The reflection and the realization… Is it missing? It is not as easy as it appears in any mechanically controlled valves which can monitor the flow of liquid and gas based our need and use. In human this disappears (not easy at all). The control is neither mechanical nor chemical where you can easily control the levers movements or the chemical reactions.
It is emotions my dear and not always in control.
Just like a driver who gives motions to the vehicle, we as writer’s gives emotions to our writing. Writing is not an easy ride though it appears to be driven by an expert driver…till we learn the art of creation and master the craft of composition. Driving appears so difficult when we have not learnt it but once we have, we don’t have to think on it. It is reflex that takes over us. Our emotions do trigger multiplicity of ideas for our writing and thinking of writing devoid of emotions is eating food without the spice and slice. Food without salt and sugar, and cake without the slice is clutter. And it is not easy to eat…
Life is a bundle of emotions and it emits in certain motion…if the motion is not in control it wrecks havoc in our life and art of writing.
Emotions can create magic if it is in control.
There are these good emotions (love, romance, joy) and there are these bad emotions (hate, fear, anger). Life has to have a taste of both and we cannot avoid the bad emotions though we may not like it. Who doesn’t want to be in eternal love and who doesn’t want to be out of fear? But the reality is that both have to coexist and we have to learn the art of this coexistence. These emotions influence our writing and writing just cannot exclude the exhibition of these emotions.
Do we write better when we are in joy than when we are in fear?
Do we express better when we are in happiness than in depression?
How do we keep our writing immune to bad emotions and how do we ensure that the good emotions play its significant part in our writing?
As if we should only write when we are in good mood and avoid writing when we are in bad mood, then the consistency can be a casualty. Consistency is important to writing and to become a good writer, this is essential. With the “motion of emotion” not in control, consistency of writing cannot be achieved. How do we work on our emotions to give writing the controlled motion?
I was reflecting on my writing and I did see a pattern that when I am in good mood, there is a beautiful flow and pattern in my thoughts. I am sure it is true to all of us. It is all-encompassing. The choice of words to the connection of sentences matters in good writing and more so the clarity of thought which in bad mood is clumsy and cluttered.
Writing just doesn’t come out.
Emotion is in a state of inertia which goes against the grain of motion.
I also realized that I have lesser control on my mood, and it is affecting my writing. I have started putting conscious efforts in controlling my motion (distance, direction, advancement) of emotions (joy, fear, anger).
But the question remains how much of our emotion influences our writing?
